Sharing for others that we just banned ChatGPT across Calix business functions and across all devices. The below is very disconcerting. Think about it, what is an AI engine? It is a learning engine therefore everything that goes into it becomes part of the learning models - which is why they lay claim to everything for it to work. IP, customer data, or other confidential internal items become part of residual knowledge rights. Thank you Samsung Electronics. We owe you. Writing an internal memo that is confidential - how would you like that to be publically available? A customer contract that is under NDA .. openly available. On and on. Assume everything entered into ChatGPT is now public domain and available to Microsoft (or others). Not a chance. This is a big deal. Of course, we love AI and are going to continue to expand use in a responsible manner. On the product side, we have the only end-to-end broadband SW platform and managed services powered by the industry’s most powerful cloud. Within that is a very powerful AI strategy: smart, controlled, managed, secure, and responsible. We love neural networks :) AI is coming all over …. for example, we are super excited about Microsoft Co-pilot (Their AI-based product) as it rolls out (We are a big Office365 shop) and it is under our MSA. The world is changing. Big time. People need to read the fine print (or lack of it) and educate teams. AI is here to stay.
I somewhat agree but this is slippery slope. I mean what about people using google docs, gmail, or google analytics? Or pretty much any search engine, including Bing, which is earning market share of search from Google on the back of OpenAI and chatGPT integration? This type of data privacy discussion in tech can get really murky quickly, and ultimately be detrimental to productivity.
I am curious why you wouldn't define more narrow policies governing use vs. an outright ban. There are productivity gains that will be missed by banning tools like this.
With AI becoming more popular for people seeking information, you may want to make an exception for any publicly released marketing materials, FAQs, etc... Think we need to think of public learning models as a new place to publish your content, not create it. Will AI replace Google for searching for answers? Is pushing your info into an these models the new SEO?
Thanks for the heads up on this Michael. I hope all is well. Congrats on all your success.
Very timely decision. The idea of using ChatGPT came up in a casual discussion, recently. We correctly concluded that it could not be used to handle proprietary information safely. But as the article shows, not everyone realizes this. An explicit policy should make it crystal clear what is acceptable usage. In some cases, it may be none. I'm curious whether Microsoft's Copilot will maintain individualized learning sets for each company? That could be useful.
Sorry to cut short. But what is data privacy exactly? Free maps Free Email Free Photos Free 5GB storage Free tools etc.. and it can go on and on and on... Nothing known as Free lunch.. Use it wisely, coz the day u created that "free" account the data is no more private
Privacy has been mentioned in some responses. I believe that the ChatGPT training is invasion of privacy if crossing data boundaries. It raises the question about who owns what data and how enforced. You shared a great example of a business training with “stolen” information and the negative effects it would have on your company. Consumers have endured such invasion through various means for monetization, etc. I have read many opinions on how AI may impact tomorrow. Great material for data policy and enforcement debate for managed-AI.
It makes me think more about the definition of innovation. Innovation is not just about bleeding-edge tech and cool capabilities. Innovation starts with the capabilities we enable our teams with PLUS the process, guardrails, GTM approach, commercial models and so much more. Innovation lives in how we do things as much as what we deliver. Fascinating to follow & encourage exploration while understanding the very real consequences.
And what about using microsoft 365? Terms and conditions allow microsoft to use your files and data..
